Hospice Care

Hospice care is the type of care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient’s care and end-of-life care.  Hospice care has been evolving since the 11th century as a philosophy of palliative care, and hospices have been regarded as places of ‘hospitality for the sick, wounded and dying.  The modern concept of hospice includes care for the incurably ill in institutions, but it also refers to the type of care often offered to those who choose to die at home.

Hospice care focuses on the emotional, spiritual and social needs as well as physical needs of those in care.  And a hospice will usually have services that feature support for families to help them cope with an impending loss.

Hospice Care in the UK The services offered by individual hospice organisations can vary but usually involves such things as: 
  • Medical and nursing care
  • Pain and symptom control
  • Therapies, including holistic approaches
  • Spiritual support
  • Practical and financial advice
  • Bereavement and loss counseling
